SRINAGAR, Aug 3: Police today said that they busted a Hizbul Mujahideen module headed by a United Kingdom based physiotherapist that was tasked to carry out Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks in Srinagar.
A police spokesman said that a sleeper cell of HM banned outfit functioning illegally under the command of self-styled commander Mohammad Shaheen Baba alias Zaid-bin Tariq son of Ghulam Qadir Baba resident of Chadoora in Central Kashmir district of Budgam.
“During preliminary investigation, it surfaced that they had planned to carry out sensational acts of terror by way of IED blasts. One Chinese pistol with magazine, 25 live rounds, incriminating documents and a mobile phone was recovered from the cell members”, the spokesman said.
Police said that Mohammad Shaheen Baba was working in UK as a physiotherapist and residing in London since 2006. He is married to an American National of Pakistani origin.
Police said that he visited Pakistan, where he got in touch with HM commanders and on their directions established the sleeper cell. The group was planning to carryout IED blasts in the Valley especially in Srinagar city.
Police also arrested other members of the group and identified them as Mudasir Ahmad Baba alias Auranzaib, Basharat Hussain Baba, Uqab Ahmad Wazir and Manzoor Ahmad.
Police said that further investigations are going on which may lead to more arrests. “In this regard, case FIR No. 134/2015 under Section 13 U.L Act has been registered in Police Station Sadder”, police said.
Reports said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was recently constituted by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Syed Javed Mujtaba Geelani, to track down and bust the recruiting modules of militants.
The SIT yesterday busted the module when Dr Baba was on his way to Srinagar Airport on way to London.
