UDHAMPUR, Aug 10:  Violation of District Magistrate order regarding ban on entry of heavy vehicle in city led to tragic death of a woman, who was crushed by a moving oil tanker on Dhar road, here today.
The deceased was identified as Geeta Devi, wife of Punjab Chand, resident of Housing Colony Udhampur. She was walking on the roadside when Oil Tanker JK02BE-3950 hit her while overtaking another vehicle.
The victim reportedly died on the spot while Police arrested the accused driver, who was identified as Mushtaq Ahmad of Chamalbas in Kashmir.
The Oil Tanker was part of the convey  stranded  in outskirts of Udhampur town  for the last two days due to blockade  of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and despite the District Magistrate’s order  banning entry of heavy vehicles in the town, Traffic Police allowed it to move on the Dhar road.
Following the accident, the people held a strong protest on Dhar road. They were demanding adequate compensation to the family of deceased and strict action against the erring cops, who allowed the heavy vehicle to move on Dhar road.
The people kept protesting after putting body of the deceased on road till senior officers reached the spot and pacified agitators.
Meanwhile, District Magistrate Udhampur has said that action would be taken against those responsible for mishap.
