NEW DELHI, Aug 12: “Bhuvan” is India’s “Google” for India. It is not only an equivalent to “Google” but indeed, to put it precisely, “Bhuvan” is ISRO’s India – specific “Google”.
These remarks were made by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh while addressing a press conference after releasing the new Applications Services of “Bhuvan” portal here today on the occasion of “National Remote Sensing Day” which coincides with the birth anniversary of Dr Vikram Sarabhai, one of the founding fathers of India’s space programme.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, having been developed purely on the strength of India’s technical know-how and through Indian resources and at the same time also for India’s specific needs, “Bhuvan” truly represents a glorious instance of the “Make in India” mission undertaken by the present government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The distinction of “Bhuvan” is that it is tailored to focus view on India and is thus capable of offering high resolution images of the region, he added.
As the utility and application of this portal becomes more and more known, its use also is becoming wider and wider, said Dr Jitendra Singh and informed that currently over 300 towns, 20 union Ministries and 30 States and union Territories are taking advantage of its services.
Of late, Dr Jitendra Singh said, the Department of Space has found enormous applications in social arena, road mapping, agriculture, horticulture and most importantly, in disaster management situations. Mapping through space has helped during floods and cyclones in the recent times, he added.
Dr Jitendra Singh complimented scientists from the Department of Space for the fact that during his “Man-ki-Baat” radio broadcast on 26th July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a special mention of appreciation about the launching of foreign satellites by ISRO. In order to make the achievements of Space Department more widely known, Dr Jitendra Singh suggested the setting up of “Hall of Space” at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi on the same lines as the Department of Atomic Energy has planned a “Hall of Nuclear Energy” there.
During the press conference, media persons were informed that the problems arising about lack of accessibility as far as “Bhuvan” portal is concerned have more or less been overcome and in times to come, “Bhuvan” will become a geospatial platform of unique distinction.
