JAMMU, Aug 22: In a major security lapse, notorious gangster and supari killer Sunny Choudhary alias Sunny Baba, who was involved in murder, attempt to murder cases and plotting to eliminate witnesses in Amandeep Singh murder case from Kot Bhalwal jail, today escaped from Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and remained untraced till late tonight.
Police have arrested all eight police personnel, who had been assigned the duty of protecting Sunny Baba during his admission in the GMC Jammu and registered a FIR against them. An inquiry has been ordered into the escape of the notorious criminal.
Reports said Sunny Baba son of Romesh Kumar, a resident of Hajipura, Nai Basti, who was in jail since March 2011 in various cases from supari killing to attempt to murder and murder, was admitted in Recovery Ward of the GMC since July 11 this year after he complained of repeated ailments. This morning, he went for bath in bathroom of Recovery Ward of the GMC Jammu and fled away breaking window.
Three cops guarding Sunny Baba kept waiting outside the bathroom and raised alarm as he didn’t return after about half an hour. Police parties led by SP City (North) Shiv Kumar Chouhan immediately rushed to the spot and rushed police parties in different directions to trace the gangster but he remained untraced.
Police have registered fresh FIR No. 91/2015 at GMC Police Post against Sunny Baba and all eight police personnel deployed with him for his protection. All eight policemen have been arrested in the FIR under Sections 223, 224 and 109 RPC for further investigations.
The arrested police personnel have been identified as ASI Krishan Chand, Varinder Singh, head constable, Jia Lal and Santokh Raj, selection grade constables, Shabir Ahmad, Noor Hussain, Pawan Singh and Rashpal Dass, all constables.
Police said a guard of eight police personnel was protecting Sunny Baba, four each during day and night. Last night, there were four police personnel on duty with him but one of them had reportedly left for the house. All of them have been suspended from the services. Police have also ordered an inquiry into the case to see whether any of the police constables had connived to facilitate escape of Sunny Baba.
Sources said the escape of Sunny Baba was major setback to police in various cases pending against him.
Sunny was arrested in March, 2011, for his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to eliminate witnesses in the murder case of Amandeep Singh in which top businessmen, their kin and police officers were accused.
Sunny had also allegedly plotted to kill a NC leader, who was actively pursuing Amandeep’s murder case.
The conspiracy to kill the NC leader was hatched inside Kot Bhalwal jail.
Even money was paid to the contract killers inside the prison. More accused involved in the supari killing has been arrested by police then.
Police had recovered a semi-automatic pistol, country-made revolver, a German revolver and four live cartridges from Sunny Baba at the time of his arrest.
Amandeep, son of former MLC Depender Kour, was allegedly shot by Jatinder Singh alias Raja and Royal Singh in August 2009 at his house under the jurisdiction of Gandhi Nagar police station. Both the accused were facing trial in the murder case.
