12 houses collapse in Mendhar; 1 dies, 3 hurt

JAMMU, Aug 21: One person was killed and three others injured as over a dozen houses collapsed in Mendhar and Surankote area during heavy rain last night while flood and land slides caused massive devastation in many parts of Poonch and Rajouri districts last night.
Two cars were washed away in a nallah in Rajouri town while two houses collapsed in border area of district Samba early today. Several roads have been closed and traffic was disrupted due to damage caused to roads and flash floods in several nallahs in the region.
Reports from Poonch said that in Ari, Gursai, Dhar Galoon and Chhajla area of Mendhar at least a dozen houses were collapsed due to heavy rain last night. A B.Ed student Mohd Tariq (23), son of Mohd Yaqoob was buried alive while two others namely Mohd Zabi, son of Kalu, resident of Niaka Majari and Abdul Ghani, son of Abdul Majid, resident of Dhar Galoon were seriously injured after a Pucca house of Mohd Yaqoob collapsed at Landi Morha in Dhar Galoon area last mid night. Due to land slides the house was totally perished and the two trapped persons under the debris were rescued by the villagers in the morning at around 8 am. The body was extricated later, with tough efforts. The injured were admitted to Mendhar sub-district hospital.
The houses belonging to Tuffail Hussain of Ari, Mohd Ashraf, Mohd Akram, Mohd Latief and Alla Ditta of the same area totally collapsed while at least two dozen houses suffered partial damage in the rains. A rice mill and Atta Chakki also got washed away in flood waters in the area. Nearly 500 kanals of land erosion has been reported due to flash floods in several nallahs in Mendhar and Surankore area over night. Eight buffaloes and five cows of the villagers were washed away in Mendhar area due to floods.
At least half a dozen transformers were damaged and power supply to many areas has been snapped. Six pumping stations have also been fully damaged in the flash floods. Mendhar to Harni and Mendhar-Qasab road has suffered massive damage causing disruption in vehicular traffic. A motor-cycle No. JK02IF/4663 was washed away in a flood water of a nallah near Mendhar. Army authorities (37 RR) provided tents and ration to the affected villagers.
The rain water entered into many shops and houses at Mendhar and Surankote town last night and caused damage to public property. The people also lodged strong protest at Mendhar accusing MC authorities, R&B and Flood Control departments for their negligence.
In Rajouri town a Maruti Swift and a Marurti -800 cars parked in a private parking were washed away due to massive flood in the nearby nallah last night. Four transformers also got damaged in the flood and the water supply to several localities of the town has been affected.
In border area of Samba district, two houses collapsed due to heavy rain this morning. A police spokesman said that houses of Som Nath and Rajinder Kumar at village Reyan collapsed and entire belongings of the villagers buried under the debris. However, no loss of life has been reported.
