JAMMU, Aug 28: Today three roof topped turtles were rescued from a unregistered pet shop in Newplot area by an animal welfare NGO Save’ ,under the jurisdiction of Sarwal Chowki here. . The shopkeeper Anil Kumar was advised 2 days ago by Ms Rumpy Madaan chairperson Save ‘ to handover these turtles to Wildlife sanctuary in Manda because their sale and purchase was banned under Wildlife Protection Act.
But he failed to do the same and today while coming back from the animal care centre Roop Nagar she saw that the turtles were still lying with him for sale in his shop. When he saw her he picked up the turtles and flung them on a roof top with disregard for poor reptiles.
Mr Balvinder Singh rescued them from there and put them in water. Incharge police Chowki Sarwal was informed and these turtles were put in the water pond maintained by Manda Sanctuary. Daily diary report was lodged and copy of the same was taken.
This illegal pet trade is flourishing in whole of the State. stringent action should taken of the authorities to check this abuse .
