JAMMU, Aug 31: On the eve of Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Indo-Pak War of 1965 and as befitting tribute to the Gallant Hero of Chhamb-Jourian, Major Bhaskar Roy, Maha Vir Chakra, the Crossed Swords Division, today rechristened the Crossed Swords Sainik Institute as Bhaskar Sainik Institute.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Nita Roy, wife of (late) Maj Bhaskar Roy along with Gen Shanker Roy Chowdhury, PVSM, ADC (Retd) and Maj Gen Kulpreet Singh, GOC, Crossed Swords Division.
Maj Bhaskar Roy was born on April 4, 1936 and was commissioned in 20 LANCERS on Dec 1956. On September 1 1965, when the Pakistani forces attacked our positions in Chhamb-Jourian Sector, Major Bhaskar Roy was commanding the ‘C’ Squadron of 20 LANCERS positioned in the area.
Undaunted by the enemy which was six times in numerical superiority and had technologically avant-grade tanks, Major Bhaskar Roy employed his armour boldly and most skillfully. He ably stemmed the enemy advance and stalled the enemy’s attempt to encircle 191 Infantry Brigade and the bridge on River Chenab.
In the tank to tank battle that ensued, Major Bhaskar Roy with his actuates leadership destroyed 13 enemy tanks and disabled several others. Throughout this operation, Major Bhaskar Roy displayed bravery and leadership of a very high order in the best traditions of the Indian Army. For his inspired leadership and outstanding courage, he was awarded ‘Maha Vir Chakra’.
