JAMMU, Aug 22: Amidst the incidents of firing on the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB), troops today captured two persons moving close to the LoC along Katua Nullah in Digwar sector of Poonch district under mysterious circumstances.
A patrol party of the Army while moving in a field close to the LoC along Katua Nullah in Digwar sector this morning spotted the suspects, one of whom was a Naib Sarpanch. Troops picked up them for questioning as the area they were working was prohibited for civilian movement, official sources said.
The captured persons have been identified as Mohammad Sadiq, Naib Sarpanch, son of Ilam Din and Shabir Hussain son of Hakim Din, both residents of Digwar.
Reports said the past history of the suspects was being looked into. They were being questioned about their motive of visiting the prohibited area right up to the LoC. So far they haven’t admitted their involvement in any undesirable activity but security agencies have reports that some persons putting up close to the LoC had been smuggling weapons and other material into this side from the LoC as the militants and their guides haven’t been able to cross the fencing due to strict surveillance maintained by the Army and installation of sophisticated gadgetry.
Sources said the Army was likely to handover the suspects to police for questioning if their activities were found undesirable.
During past about a fortnight, a series of incidents of firing and ceasefire violations by Pakistan Army have been reported from the LoC especially in Krishna Ghati and Poonch sectors. Sources added that some of the firing incidents were aimed at facilitating infiltration attempts by the militants, which were thwarted by the troops.
In past also, Pakistan Army, Intelligence agencies as well as militants have been found using couriers along the LoC to pick up weapons and other consignments from the border and supply them to the militants. A number of such couriers and Over Ground Workers have been arrested by security forces and police from time to time.
It may be mentioned here that Army and Border Security Force (BSF) were maintaining a high alert along the LoC and International Border following a sudden spurt in firing and ceasefire violations by Pakistan Army and Rangers.
More than 15 ceasefire violations, eight along on the IB in RS Pura, Arnia and Samba sectors have been reported while rest have taken place on the LoC in Poonch sector. The increase in incidents of firing and ceasefire violations on LoC and IB was reported after a tunnel dug by Pakistani authorities about 540 meters into the Indian territory, originating from Pakistan, was detected on July 27 at forward village of Chechwal in Samba sector.
The latest incident of firing and ceasefire violation by the Rangers was reported from Pindi Charkan Kallan Camp in Arnia sector yesterday in which half a dozen farmers were trapped. They had reached the village only after the firing stopped in the evening.
