Workshop on ‘Monitoring birds & their habitats in Himalayas’ begins at Bhaderwah Campus

Bhaderwah, Sept 19:  Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu Prof. RD Sharma today inaugurated a two days National workshop on ‘Monitoring birds and their habitats in Himalayas’ organized by the Institute of Mountain Environment, Bhaderwah campus in collaboration with Department of Wildlife Protection.
In his address, Prof. Sharma, on reiterated that hard work is key to success whether it relates to  academics or research. He further reiterated and impressed upon the researchers and the faculty members to develop the capacity to independently secure the research funding and raise the academic and research standards thereof. He appreciated the efforts of the researchers and faculty members of IME for taking up collaborative research with the institutes of national and international repute. He hoped that  recommendations of the workshop will help the policy makers to devise a comprehensive management plan for the birds in the State.
Prof. G.M. Bhat, Rector Bhaderwah Campus and Chairperson NWBM-2015,  acquainted the gathering about the new initiatives being taken up by the Bhaderwah Campus in academics and Institute of Mountain Environment in research.
Dr. Neeraj Sharma Organizing Secretary, NWBM-2015, introduced the theme of the workshop and highlighted the importance of technologies and protocols for the monitoring of aquatic and forest birds in Himalayas. He also emphasized upon the significance and relevance of the workshop in the contemporary scenario.
About 35 avian researchers, scientists, bird watchers, scholars and volunteers from different institutes, organizations and NGOs like IIRS, WII, WTI, NCF, Bird Count India etc. from across the nation and State participated in the workshop. Rohit Chakravarty from Bird Count India delivered a crisp presentation on eBird and voluntary bird watching and urged the gathering to make birding a routine feature of their life. The workshop will culminate on its second day in the form of a field workshop to be held at Jai on September 20, 2015 he said.  Shayan Javeed,  Faculty of Economics presented formal vote of thanks.
