SRINAGAR: Despite rain the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country remained through though heavy vehicles are plying on one-side only while the Srinagar-Leh and historic Mughal roads also remained through for traffic.
The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained open despite overnight rain which continued today also, a traffic police official told.
He said hundreds of light vehicles, including those carrying passengers, left Srinagar and Jammu this morning.
However, heavy vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu only, he said, adding that no heavy vehicle will be allowed from Jammu today.     Heavy vehicles are plying on alternative days on the highway as Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for its maintenance was still working on road widening and repair.
However, light vehicles are plying on both sides daily, he said.
The highway remained frequently closed during last winter and later in the months of March and April due to soil erosion and sinking of road at Udhampur, Penthal and Ramban and Ramsu. However, it was decided to ply only one-way traffic for all vehicles. Later, it was decided that light vehicles will ply from both sides while heavy vehicles one-side only which still continued.
Traffic police official said traffic on historic Mughal road connecting Shopian in South Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region and highway linking Ladakh region with Kashmir are also through despite rain. (AGENCIES)
