15 detained from old city

SRINAGAR, Oct 2: Police today detained 15 persons including a non-local during stone-throwing clashes that raged in old city area after Friday prayers.
Reports said that dozens of masked youth assembled inside the compound of Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of old city soon after the Friday prayers.
The masked youth later pelted stones on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel deployed in strength at Nowhatta triggering violent clashes. Police fired teargas and pepper gas to disperse the protesters.
The clashes later spread to Rajouri Kadal, Kawdara and Saraf Kadal areas of the City. Clashes in the area prompted shopkeepers to close their shops and traffic came to a halt.
Police detained 15 stone-throwers during clashes near Rajouri Kadal. A non-local identified as Vikram is also among those 15 detained on charges of stone throwing.
Clashes between police and protesters continued till late in the evening during which police fired several aerial shots to disperse the stone-throwers at Kawdara area this evening.
