The bride burning incident in Srinagar a few days back has sent shock waves across the whole spectrum of society. The incident has received wide condemnation from religious and political leaders.
The incident once again raises the question on the safety of women in the State. It was expected that with education and enlightenment the status of women in society would go up, but that is not happening.
Instead what we witness is alarming rise in violence against women incidents. Whether it is eve teasing, rape or bride burning incidents, there is no let up. The social structure of society is badly disintegrating and in coming days, it would deteriorate further, in case no remedial measures are taken right now.
The social thinkers, religious preachers and women themselves have to introspect over this social issue.
There have been incidents where women themselves have been responsible for commiting violence against women.
If these incidents are not stopped at this time, one is not sure whether they will come to end in the future.
