National workshop on Archaeology of Northern India from tomorrow

JAMMU, Aug 25: Leading Archaeologists, historians, museologists, heritage experts and scholars of Buddhist studies drawn from different parts of the country will come together in winter capital on August 27 and 28, 2012, to participate in the national workshop on Archaeology of Northern India being organized by Srinagar Circle of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Talking to Excelsior, Anil Kumar Tiwari, Superintending Archaeologist (SA), Srinagar Circle of ASI, said that the workshop is part of the series of such national level workshops being held along with a calendar of events to commemorate the 150-year celebrations of ASI.
He said the Srinagar Circle is happy to host the national workshop, which would provide a golden opportunity to get new in-puts from the stalwarts and senior scholars on the archaeology of Jammu and Kashmir.
He informed that along with Jammu in north, other regional centers where workshops are to be held include Bangaluru in South, Guwahati in East, Vadodara in West and Bhopal in Central India. He said that well-known archaeologist and Director ASI, Dr A K Sinha, is the program coordinator of the 150 years celebrations of ASI.
On the side lines of the workshop being held at the Police Auditorium, a photo exhibition highlighting conservation and preservation work of monuments along with scientific excavations carried out by Srinagar Circle in J&K, will also be put on show.
Prominent among the workshop participants include experts and scholars from ASI like from Dr R C Agarwal and R S Bisht, Joint DGs (retd), Dr Bhuvan Vikram, SA, Excavation Branch, Bhuvneshwar, Dr O P Mishra, Bhopal, Prof U C Chattopadhyaya, Dept. of Archaeology, Delhi University, Dr Vidula Jaiswal, Center for Cultural Studies & Research, Varanasi, Dr R P Pandey, Jiwaji University, Gawalior and Dr A K Sinha, Director ASI.
The well-known local scholars invited to take part in the workshop include Prof Poonam Choudhary, Prof Suman Jamwal, Prof Anita Billawaria, Dr Shyam Narayan Lal, Dr Lalit Gupta and Saleem Beg.
