18391 cancer cases detected since 2013: Govt

Srinagar, Oct 6: Government today said that 18, 391 people have been detected with cancer in the State since year 2013.
In a written reply to Member of Legislative Council (MLC), Qaiser Jamsheed Lone, the Minister-In-charge Health and Medical Education stated that 6300 persons were detected with cancer in 2013 and it witnessed steep increase in 2014 with 7098 persons being detected with cancer. The number stands at 4993 so far this year, the stated.
The Health Department stated that out of 18391 patients, a total of 17515 are undergoing treatment. In a separate reply to another question posed by MLC Naresh Kumar Gupta, the Health Department stated that two cancer institutions have been sanctioned with one at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar and another at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu.
In another written reply to MLC Jugal Kishore question, the Government stated that the Congress-led UPA regime had sanctioned 3 Tertiary Care Cancer Center in three districts including at Kupwara in Kashmir Division and Kishtwar and Udhampur in Jammu Division. Regarding the current status , it stated: “The State Government has signed MoU of the sanctioned 3 Tertiary Care Cancer Centers and submitted the same to Government of India for which funding is awaiting.”
Besides, the Government also stated that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has identified five districts for setting up of new medical colleges in the State. The five districts include Anantnag and Baramulla in Kashmir Division and Doda, Rajouri and Kathua in Jammu Division.
The Government has also stated that two new 200 bedded maternity hospitals, one each at Bemina in Srinagar and Gandhi Nagar in Jammu, at a cost of Rs 50 crore each have been taken up for execution against which Rs 26.50 crore and Rs 20.50 crore stand utilized up to ending March 2015 respectively. “The structure has been completed and finishing work is in progress,” it has said.
The Government has stated in its reply that two 16 ANM/GNM schools in Jammu and Kashmir have also been sanctioned. Furthermore, it said the  Government of India has provided funds amounting to Rs 11.89 crore to carry out repair and renovation of old buildings of District Hospital for Mother Child Hospital (MCH) purpose.
