Crime against women

Sir,
Over the past some time, the TV news channels  flash news of women and girls  having been gangraped, molested and brutalised almost  everyday  in different parts of our country.Criminals have become so brutal and audacious that even the young minor  and mentally unsound girls are sexually molested at their tender age.One wonders whether we are really living in the civilized world. If we go by the statisics, a woman in India is raped every twenty minutes, which is simply reprehensible though many such  cases may go unreported. Besides being a victim of domestic violence and gender discrimination, women donot find themselves safe even in homes, offices and marketplaces. In many cases, the the girls from poor families are cheated and lured with false promises of marriage jobs and better life and then exploited. It is time to take urgent steps to protect our girls and womenfolk from unscruplous elements of the society.Though the Government has constituted National/ State Women Commission to safeguard the interests and rights of women, these institutions need to be bestowed with more teeth and powers. There is  also need to have separate women police stations and more representation of women in the  Police Force. The parents should not leave their daugters to the care of their friends or distant relatives as in many cases, the victims of molestation are known to the accused.
It is the responsibility of the Government to ensure that women are not victimized so that they can live an honourable and dignified life.Cases registered for crime against women need to be tried in the  fast track courts for their speedy disposal.National/ State Commission for Women need to be vested with more powers.Women need to be given more representations in decision making bodies such as Parliament/ State Assemblies/Civic Bodies etc.Parents must bring up their daughters in such an atmosphere where they can report any incident of physical abuse/violence in a fearless manner.Above all, people must change their mindset towards women and learn to respect them as they would like their own mother, sisters and daughters to be treated by others.
Yours etc…..
