Wildlife Protection Deptt holds painting, debate competitions

JAMMU, Oct 8: Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife Protection Department today organized a debate and painting competition to mark the culmination of Wildlife Week.
The theme of the competitions was ‘Wildlife Conservation’. A large number of students hailing from different schools of Jammu participated in the competitions and gave the message of protecting the wildlife through their painting and oratory skills. They gave a very loud and clear message of conserving wildlife especially saving the national animal Tiger from extinction.
Gulshan Kumar from Balgran, Channi Himmat emerged as winner in the painting competition. Nidhanshi of Shangrila Public School, Sarwal and Suhana Shamin from New Rambo Public School, Bathindi managed to secure second and third positions respectively.
In debate competition, Sushant from New Era Environment High School was adjudged as winner while Manpreet Kaur from Shangrila Public School, Sarwal and Ayush Sharma of DBN Vidyamandir, Mubarak Mandi secured the second and third spots respectively.
The Wildlife week started on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. During the week-long celebrations, the department organized various programmes to educate the students about the need for conservation and preservation of wildlife and rich flora and fauna of the State.
The department also organized cultural programmes and visits of children to the wildlife protected areas to give them feel of the natural habitat of the wild animals. The common masses residing in areas adjoining the protected areas were also briefed about the preventive measures to be adopted to avoid man-animal conflicts.
Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Retd) Upender Pachnanda was the chief guest on the occasion.
While addressing the gathering, he stressed on the importance of conservation and preservation of wildlife for the sustainable development of mankind.  He further emphasized on the need to create awareness about the nature and safeguarding our environment by adopting eco friendly lifestyle.
Pachnanda highlighted the importance of conservation of wildlife and their habitat. He appealed the people to make the state green and safe haven for rich biodiversity of the State.
He said that measures should be taken to avoiding man-animal conflict and highlighted the environmental issues and need of conservation of wetlands of the State.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Retd) M M Gupta, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) A K Gupta, Joint Director Information Jammu Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Wildlife Warden Lalit Sharma, Conservator of Forests (East Circle) B M Sharma and officers of Wildlife Protection Department were also present in the valedictory function.
