SRINAGAR, Oct 13: To implement BharatNet programme in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Secretary, B R Sharma today chaired 2nd meeting of the State Apex Committee on Digital India.
BharatNet is an initiative under Digital India Programme launched by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on July 1, 2015 to ensure that Government services are made available to citizens electronically by improving IT infrastructure and by increasing internet connectivity.
The initiative plans to connect rural areas with high speed internet networks. Digital India has three core components viz creation of digital infrastructure, delivering services digitally and digital literacy.
BharatNet initiative will work towards building high-speed digital highways to connect all 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats of country by next year. This would be the world’s largest rural broadband connectivity project using optical fiber.
The Apex Committee set out the basic requirements for faster implementation of the programme and discussed selection of implementation model for BharatNet in Jammu & Kashmir viz CPSU-led, Private Sector led and State Government led implementation models, with directions from the Chief Secretary to the IT Department to fast track the implementation process of the programme.
Modalities to establish end to end network from District to Block and Block to Gram Panchayat level through fibre optics network under BharatNet project were discussed in the meeting.
