JAMMU, Oct 13: Following a high voltage drama amidst gherao of the Vice-Chancellor by the agitating ABVP activists, who were demanding permission to organize their `Student Leaders Conference’ on the campus, the Jammu University authorities ordered closure of the university tomorrow in view of apprehensions of some trouble on the campus.
“In view of apprehension of disturbing the peaceful atmosphere on the campus by a group of misguided elements, the University offices and teaching shall remain suspended on October 14, 2015. All scheduled examinations for today stand postponed, for which fresh dates shall be notified later,” said a hurriedly issued public notice by the JU Registrar, late this evening.
The trouble erupted on the eve of ABVP event after JU Security officials did not allow the vehicles carrying chairs and tents for tomorrow’s function, to enter the campus. As the matter reached to the Vice-Chancellor Prof R D Sharma, he refused to allow holding of any such even by stating that no political organization or its student wing could be allowed to carry its activities on the campus.
Agitated over the Vice-Chancellor’s response, the ABVP activists staged a dharna in front of the VC Secretariat and raised slogans. As either JU or ABVP refused to budge from their respective stand, the high-voltage drama continued for more than two hours. Later, the ABVP activists also gheraoed the Vice-Chancellor after he came out of his office chamber. However, Police personnel reached the spot timely and took the VC away in their vehicle.
Soon after this high voltage drama, JU authorities announced suspension of official as well as class work in the university tomorrow in the wake of apprehensions of some trouble on the campus by ABVP, which has reiterated that the `Student Leaders Conference’ would be held as per schedule.
” We have not changed venue of the conference, in which Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) president Satinder Awana will be the chief guest,” said Pawan Sharma, ABVP State organizing secretary.
