Campaign ends in Leh

JAMMU, Oct 15: Campaigning for elections to 26 seats of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, came to an end at 4 pm today even as the district administration dispatched polling staff and security personnel to 120 polling stations this morning. In rest of the polling stations, the teams would be sent tomorrow morning.
The LAHDC Leh will go to polls on October 17.
Official sources said the campaigning concluded peacefully with no major complaint recorded from any of the five major parties-BJP, Congress, PDP, NC and New Ladakh Movement (NLM) apart from the Independent candidates. A total of 90 candidates are in the fray for 26 seats.
Authorities today declared holiday for two days in entire Leh district for October 16 and 17 excepting the offices engaged with elections. The schools, colleges and offices will remain closed in Leh district for two days.
Sources said the polling parties and paramilitary and police personnel to 120 far off polling stations were dispatched today from Leh while in rest of polling stations, they will be sent tomorrow morning. Polling parties and security staff was airlifted to six polling stations yesterday.
Start campaigners like NC leader and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh and Avinash Rai Khanna (BJP), GA Mir and Rigzin Jora (Congress), Nayeem Akhter, Anayat Ali and Abdul Haq Khan (PDP) campaigned for their candidates.
BJP and Congress are contesting 25 seats each while PDP and NC have fielded their candidates on eight seats each. NLM is contesting 17 seats. Rest of the candidates are Independents.
