Kashmiri literature has a few novels. This genre of literature has not been attended fully since the inception of prose. Ghulam Nabi Gowhar has written Novels besides a Novel by Akhtar Mohi-u-Din.
Speaking on the occasion, Khayal said that this is welcome step and a creative addition to language and literature.
Prof Shaad Ramzan, Head, Department of Kashmiri delivered an extensive paper on novel. He said that the flood in the novel is an allegory, as Kashmiris have seen so many floods since independence. The novel reveals socio-cultural history of Kashmir through stream of consciousness technique. It starts from the floods of 1914 and reaches to 1947 where our social and political structure was in making. It deals with the subtle nuances of life, it’s under current romance and hatred. It is novel of human psychology dealt in a perfect novel style, Prof Ramzan added.
Shujat Bukhari said that it is an absorbing, unsetting, multi-layered novel, and beautifully crafted telling us a story of that Kashmir which witnessed so many ups and downs during past decades. Its effect is enhanced by that chaste Kashmiri language and idiom which the writer has used. A breathless opening depicts devastating flood of 2014, which has shaken everything. It is truly an original story dealing with so many subjects at a time through the allegorical approach. It is in a way a bold revelation of the chain of events in Kashmir since accession. I believe that it is a great addition to Kashmiri fiction, he added.
