Shutdown observed in Valley

Srinagar, Oct 27: A shutdown called by separatists to protest the landing of Army in 1947, was observed in Kashmir valley today amidst incidents of stone-pelting at a few places.
Shops, commercial establishments, educational institutes, private offices and petrol pumps were mostly closed in Srinagar while the public transport was partially off the roads. The private vehicles were, however, plying normally. The attendance in Government offices and banks was low because of shutdown.
The situation in city was by and large peaceful but stone-throwing clashes between youth and security forces erupted at some places in downtown and peripheries. Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were deployed at sensitive places to curb the protests by separatists.
The clashes erupted at Saraf Kadal, Habba Kadal and Nowgam during which police used teargas and pepper grenades to disperse the demonstrators. At Nowgam, police fired few aerial shots to contain the stone-pelting.
The shutdown was also observed in other districts of the Valley but the situation remained peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere.
Meanwhile, clashes broke out in Pulwama area of South Kashmir after funeral prayers of two Hizbul Mujahideen militants killed yesterday.
