India to ban surrogacy for foreigners

NEW DELHI: The Centre today said that surrogacy will be allowed only for Indian couples and not foreigners. “The government does not support commercial surrogacy. ”No foreigners can avail surrogacy services in India,” the Central government said in an affidavit in the Supreme Court.
The government also told the apex court that the import of embryos for commercial surrogacy should be banned except for research and other purposes. The top court is expected to take up the matter again on 24th November.
A penalty has also been proposed on couples refusing to take custody of a surrogate child born with disabilities . A petition in the Supreme Court stated that this unregulated business exploits poor women. It sought a halt to the import of human embryos for commercial purposes.  (UNI)
