VARANASI, Nov 4: Uttar Pradesh Governor, Ram Naik and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh visited the site of Ganga River Rafting Expedition on the banks of river Ganges at Varanasi’s “Assi Ghat”, which is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency and is located hardly a kilometer away from Modi’s parliamentary constituency office at Ravindrapuri Nagar Colony.
The Governor and the Union Minister also felicitated the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Rafting Team for having undertaken this expedition and presented awards to the winners of  competition events organized to promote “Swachch Bharat” and “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaigns.
Speaking on the occasion, Ram Naik said, Ganga has become so much polluted that even those who take a holy dip in it and drink a sip of its water out of religious faith, keep worrying about the health consequences of having done so. He also expressed concern about dead bodies flowing down with the river and causing unimaginable pollution.
Dr Jitendra Singh said, cleaning of Ganga is not only a matter of faith but a scientific necessity to ensure clean environment for the coming generations. It was this thought which prompted Prime Minister Modi to set up an exclusive separate Ministry for this purpose which has undertaken the task of cleaning the rivers in a big way.
Inspired by Ganga cleansing, Dr Jitendra Singh disclosed, he had got initiated a project to clean river Devika in Udhampur, which is part of his constituency and is mythologically believed to be the younger sister of Ganga.
Mayor of Varanasi Ramgopal Mohel, local MLA Ravindra Jaiswal, IG and senior officers of ITBP and a large number of local citizens were present on the occasion.
