Workshop on surgical skill development in Gynaecologic oncology held

JAMMU, Nov 24: On the second day of the ongoing three-day long conference on “Mentorship for Health Care Professionals into Oncocare”, a workshop on surgical skill development in Gynaecologic oncology was organized here today.
The workshop was followed by group discussion on identification of masses in the abdomen. There was focus on identifying surgical, gynaecological masses and their pathology which could be managed easily by the sub-specialists in the periphery.
The participants were of the opinion that till today 8 per cent of the abdominal masses remains undiagnosed despite of all identification measures. An improvement in morphological studies and biomarkers application which could easily discriminate between benign and malignant disease would allow average surgeon to deal with benign diseases leaving the malignant diseases to be treated by specialist in tertiary care Institutes.
Earlier, tree-day long conference, workshop and live demonstration on “Mentorship for Health Care Professionals into Oncocare”, was inaugurated yesterday.
The programme has been organized by Lajwanti Medical Trust, Jammu in collaboration with Jammu AGOI Chapter and sponsored by J&K Bank.
The theme of the conference was evidence based approach for identification and management of surgical and Gynaecologic Cancers. The participants included doctor faculty invited from abroad and India as well as local healthcare professionals and healthcare administrators. The invited faculty included doctors from Australia, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Delhi.
The local participants included Dr Shashi Gupta, Head Dept of Gynaecology, SMGS Hospital, Dr Sunil Gupta, Head Dept of Surgery, Dr KK Koul, Head Department of Pathology and Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Head Radiation Oncology RCC, GMC Jammu. There were non-physician delegates, who were also part of this programme.
While speaking, the key spokesperson on the inaugural function Dr Kailash Narayan, Head, Gynaecology Oncology, Peter Maccallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia laid stress on the awareness about the cancer among the masses in Jammu and Kashmir.
He added that various types of doctors are involved in treating a cancer patient and no one can claim himself as specialized in cancer treatment. He stated that cancer treatment requires group work and coordination.
Dr Kasturi Lal Gupta, Organizer of the conference, said that each department in the hospitals here should have sub-speciality unit to treat cancer, which should be chaired by Head. The Head should coordinate with Pathologist Onco expert, Radition expert and medical oncologist expert to treat and patient.
He added that as the level of cancer care is determined by individual domain, public domain, provider domain and policy makers domain, this strategic making of academicians with public will involve new strategies after interaction with each other for better cancer care in Jammu.
Dr Gupta informed that in order to build required skills in manpower, Lajwanti Trust has been organizing CME based learning programs. It is the objective of the institution to make an evidence based practice easier for local cancer specialist by providing accessible and easy to use guidance at the point of care, he added.
