JAMMU, Dec 8: Presentation of Ichhupal Singh’s Punjabi translation of Dr Shanker Shesh’s Hindi play ‘Fandi’ marked the second day of ongoing annual drama festival at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
The play which pitches for Euthanasia, revolves around the protagonist who is a poor truck driver named Fandi, and facing the charge of murdering his terminally ailing father. The nervous lawyer appointed to defend Fandi, though good hearted and a sensitive man tries to help Fandi, but falters in the court especially when the Government prosecutor turns Fandi’s friends into foe and his wife doesn’t turn up for testimony. Other witnesses naively close the door to Fandi’s release. The lawyer recognizes his own inefficiency and invites another senior advocate. The senior advocate argues the case but the judgment is left to the imagination of the audience.
Directed by debutant Sourav Verma, the performance which revolved around three actors was striking the way it brought forth without any gloss, various dimensions of the moral dilemma involved in mercy killing. The young actors were successful in keeping up the pace of play. The two-page continuous dialogues were delivered almost flawlessly by Sandeep Verma as Fandi’s Lawyer. Ayaan Ali as ‘Fandi’ playing all kind of characters in 1 hour-court room scene, also gave a good performance but could have come up with more variations in rendering different characters. The third actor in role of Warden was Love Anand, who was also the assistant in production. The set was designed by Sandeep Verma and lights and music by Mohit Mehra.
Tomorrow Kapoor Singh Ghumman’s Punjabi play ‘Pagal Lok’, directed by T. S. Premi, will be presented by Manoranjan Kala Kendra.
