NH re-opens for 2-way traffic

SRINAGAR, Dec 12: After two days of snow and rains, the weather in Kashmir improved today and Srinagar-Jammu National Highway that was closed yesterday morning re-opened for two-way traffic.
The improvement in weather led to drop in the night temperature across Kashmir with Ski resort of Gulmarg recording minus 10 degrees, the coldest of the season so far.
The hills of Valley received light snowfall during the night and rains in plain areas.
The National Highway that was closed following snowfall in Jawahar Tunnel area and landslides and shooting stones in Ramban and Battery Cheshma areas was re-opened for two way traffic this morning.
However, Mughal Road, connecting Kashmir with Poonch area of Jammu province remained closed for the third day today due to heavy snowfall. Srinagar-Leh National Highway is also closed for traffic due to snowfall in Zojila area.
The clear skies in some parts of Kashmir valley led to plummeting of night temperature.
Gulmarg, registered the minimum temperature of minus 10.6 degrees Celsius, a decrease of three degrees from the previous night’s minus 7 degrees Celsius. This is the lowest night temperature in Gulmarg so far this winter.
The mercury in Pahalgam tourist resort plunged about seven degrees from the previous night’s 0.4 degree Celsius to settle at a low of minus 6.5 degrees Celsius.
The night temperatures also decreased in Kupwara and Kokernag towns where the minimum settled at minus 2.9 degrees Celsius and minus 1.9 degree Celsius respectively.
Qazigund recorded a low temperature of minus 0.6 degree Celsius as against 0.4 degree Celsius the previous night.
Srinagar recorded a low temperature of 0.6 degree Celsius as compared to 0.3 degree Celsius the previous night.
The City also recorded about 3 mm of rainfall and snow during the night.
The mercury in Leh, in the frontier Ladakh region, went down by over three degrees to settle at a low temperature of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius.
The MeT office has forecast isolated rains in the Valley today and said the weather is likely to remain dry over the next few days from tomorrow.
