China hails Indo-Pak thaw; pitches for India, China cooperation in Asia-Pacific

NEW DELHI, Dec 19: Describing the rise of India and China as a major development of the 21rst century, Chinese Ambassador to India Le Yucheng today said the cooperation between the two countrties would make a huge difference to the way things happen in the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr Le also noted the thaw in the relations of India and Pakistan as a sign of the increasing cooperation in the region. ”We have stepped up cooperation in BRICS, UN and various multilateral fora, and the coordination between the two at the Paris Climate Change Summit was a case in point,” the Ambassador said.

He pointed out that US President Barack Obama made special calls to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Premier Xi jin Ping after the land mark agreement in Paris to appreciate their respective country’s role in arriving at a consensus.

His remarks came while delivering a special address at the day-long dialogue on ‘The Asia Pacific Century: India and the Big Power Engagement’ organised by the Deccan Herald group. The Chinese envoy said the Asia-Pacific region was marked by three elements today—chaos, change and also cooperation.

He noted terrorism, illegal migration, drug trafficking as among the chaotic elements that posed a challenge to peac and stability in the region, pointing to the recent IS attack in Paris and to the threat of terrorism to his own country. Mr Le, however, noted that change was also emerging out of this Chaos as evident in increasing global coordination regarding reforms of the international political econmic order and in other areas.

“Amid chaos and change, it was important to step up cooperation in this globalised era”, he said. Mr Le cited the Iranian nuclear deal as an example of the international cooperation that was replacing the chaos.

He noted with satisfaction that the Asia-Pacif region had been relatively free from serious conflicts, and in this context expressed appreciation the ceasfire in Myanmar and the decision of India and Pakisatn to resume their peace dialogue.

Earlier, delivering the inaugural address, BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav also spoke over the political and econmic importance of the region, which he, however, said would like to call the Indo-Pacific instead of the Asia-Pacifc region because of the crucial importance of the Indian Ocean.

Mr Madhav noted that two major powers of the region- India and China had been able to maintain peace and started working in cooperation in various areas despite the difficulties and complexities of their relations. (UNI)
