JU celebrates 5 years of ‘Tree Talk’

Jammu, Dec 19: A gala progrrame, jointly organized by the Departments of Botany and Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu marked the successful completion of the green campaign “Tree Talk”.
The environmental cum natural heritage awareness campaign, organized in the green lawns of the Botanical Garden of the University of Jammu witnessed the participation of more than 300 people from all walks of the life with great enthusiasm.
B. R Sharma, the Chief Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir was the chief guest while Prof. Keshav Sharma, The Registrar, University of Jammu, Jammu presided over the function.
Expressing satisfaction over the impact this movement has left in the hearts and minds of the masses of the country, B. R. Sharma said the initiative becomes  more important when the whole world is seriously deliberating on the climate change.
Citing some recent catastrophic natural disasters, Chief Secretary maintained that the conservation and preservation of our natural resources is the only way out left for preventing such furious reactions of the nature and also sought cooperation of the masses for maintaining the ecological balance in order to preserve our natural resources.
For conservation of the rare and endangered medicinal plants of the State, Mr Sharma also assured for an establishment of a nursery at an appropriate place.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Keshav Sharma, highlighted the green initiatives taken in the University under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. R D Sharma and wished the tree talk a great success.
Earlier Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Head, department of Botany, JU formally welcomed the guests and tree talk participants to the University.
Prof. Anil K. Raina extended the formal vote of thanks.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Tree talk campaign focusing on UN environmental initiatives, was launched on December 19-, 2010 with the initiative of OP Sharma Vidyarthi, IFS. The mission aims at acquainting common people with the components of biodiversity, plants and animals, birds, trees, their nomenclature, utilities and values and forest utilization as practiced by different  communities.
