It is quite satisfying that the authorities concerned have shown farsightedness by taking a decision of installing traffic lights at various crossings in Jammu city with a view to give the City a system of regulating ever increasing traffic based on modern lines minimising the manual management of traffic on city roads by traffic policemen. The move is welcome and certainly the need of the hour considering that in today time, it’s not feasible for a traffic man to stand on a crossing and move his hands frequently to give directions to the vehicle owners plying on roads.
Now going by media reports referring to chaos sometimes created at some crossings due to rush of traffic and people jumping these lights. I think the reasons behind this is that the system has been installed recently and is still in its infancy. People are not yet fully accustomed to the new system of traffic lights on city roads. The need of the hour is to create awareness among the public through media and by holding workshops as well. Though majority of people follow this traffic signal, there are only some who are jumping the traffic lights perhaps due to their unawareness about the traffic signals. There might be few doing it intentionally but they can be taken care of by the traffic policemen.
But hopefully, I think the people will get used to the new system and follow these traffic signals while travelling on city roads considering that these traffic lights have been installed with a view to streamline the heavy rush of traffic on roads as well as to provide safe driving for the people. The heavy rush of vehicles plying on roads of Jammu is always posing new challenges to the authorities in view of the addition of new vehicles coming on roads every month.
There are reports of malfunctioning of traffic lights at some crossings in a section of media apprehending compromise with the quality. But I think we should not rush to doubt the good intention of the authorities giving the city a reliable, effective and efficient modern way to streamline traffic on roads. As we all know that the traffic lights have, of late, been installed in twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar and hardly one month old. I would say that every new system, howsoever, robust may be, shall be having some problems in intial stages of their installation and takes time to establish. Keeping this in view, I hope the authorities must obviously be keeping a constant tab on the functioning of the new system of traffic lights in the city, getting feedback from all quarters including public response to the new system with a view to apprise themselves about the difficulties/problems technical or otherwise encountered in the process and to set them right soon. Surely the snags in traffic signal functioning wherever occurring and coming to notice need to be taken care of and rectified on priority basis paving the way for a smooth plying of traffic on city roads.
