Leh, Mughal roads remain closed, Kashmir highway through

SRINAGAR :  The national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir valley,  and historic Mughal road remained closed only to be reopened in April-May while the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for both way traffic despite rain.
There was fresh moderate to heavy snowfall particularly between Sonamarg-Zojila pass and Meenmarg on the 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway, which has been closed for any traffic movement since last month. Several feet of snow had accumulated at Zojila, an official source said.
They said the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, will start snow clearance operation only in March.
The historic 86-km-long Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region also remained closed for traffic since January this year.
A senior officer of the Shopian district said that the administration will start snow clearance operation in March to put the highway through in April, depends upon the snow.
A traffic police official said today that the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for traffic despite rain. However, due to slippery road conditions in the morning, some restrictions have been imposed to avoid any accident, he said.
He said from Jammu (Nagrota), Srinagar bound passenger vehicles will be allowed to move only between 0600 hrs to 1300 hrs while heavy vehicles will be permitted only between 0630 hrs to 1130 hrs.
However, no Srinagar bound passenger vehicle will be permitted to cross Udhampur (Jekhani Chowk) after 1430 hrs while no heavy vehicle will be permitted after 1330 hrs.
From Kashmir to Jammu, light motor vehicles would be permitted to move from Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir only between 0830 hrs to 1600 hrs while heavy vehicles, between 0900 hrs to 1400 hrs. (UNI)
