Sir,
Refer to the article titled “Savitribai Phule- The pioneer of women education in India” published in this paper on 3rd Jan. by D.R. Bhagat. The article was really an eye opener to the society and also a great source of inspiration to the Indian women, in general and to those belonging to the downtrodden communities, in particular. As mentioned by the author, Savitribai Phule was, of course, the first woman who started the first ever school in India exclusively for girls at a time when nobody could dare to think about educating a girl. Former President of India, Late APJ Abdul Kalam has rightly said, “If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.”
Now-a-days, the women in India are excelling in almost every field including education, politics, judiciary, sports etc. but still they are not getting their due respect and regards which they otherwise deserve. Even today, women’s competence is often questioned and they are not considered at par with their male counterparts. Unfortunately, so called ‘gender bias’ or ‘gender discrimination’ still exists in our society. Bharat Rattan, Dr B.R. Ambedkar had once said (while addressing a women folk in a conference), “Do not believe in fate. Believe in your strength…you must abolish your slavery yourselves. Do not depend for its abolition upon God or Super-human, your salvation lies in political power and not in making pilgrimages and observance of fast”.
In order to put the Indian women on the pedestal of dignity and self-respect, a lot still needs to be done in letter and spirit. Despite many strict laws and legislations protecting the interests of women in India, the socio-economic condition of the Indian women does not seems to be improving in proper perspectives. Infact, the fault lies in the proper implementation of the laws and government policies and not in the legislations itself.
Yours etc…..
