Docs at Kupwara Hospital accused of nexus with private clinics

Srinagar, Jan 10: Patients who visit Kupwara Hospital for treatment have accused doctors for being in nexus with the owners of private clinics and administration has formed a committee to look into one such allegation.
Rafiq Ahmad, an attendant of a patient, said the doctors ask patients to do medical tests from outside clinics even though such tests could be done at the hospital. “We are poor people and come from remote areas in hope of quality treatment at this hospital but here we are told to do all kind of tests outside in private clinics,” alleged Rafiq.
Ghulam Nabi, an attendant of another patient, said that the doctors even ask them to repeat the tests from outside clinics. “The blood test can even be done at the hospital but they refer us outside,” he said.
Last week, a doctor referred a female patient to an outside clinic for Ultra Sonography (USG) after which authorities sought an explanation from him and constituted a 4 member probe team.
The doctors – who have been accused of being in nexus with the private clinic owners for getting perks and gifts – say that they don’t get “visible results” of the medical tests conducted inside the Kupwara Hospital. However, an official rejected the doctors’ argument, saying: “there are four surgeons in the hospital but they never complained of poor results.”
Block Medical Officer (BMO), Dr Fareed said that he has already taken cognizance of one such complaint and assured action in case anyone is found guilty. “I have constituted 4-member panel and also charge sheeted a doctor regarding the same. I assure you that if anyone is found guilty he would face the music as per law and norms,” he told Excelsior.
Pertinent to mention here that the Excelsior had reported last week that the Kupwara Hospital – which on papers is a Community Health Centre but has been named as District Hospital – lacks basic medical facilities. The patients from far-flung areas including those who live near Line of Control (LoC) come to Kupwara Hospital everyday but due to lack of facilities and mismanagement they often face disappointment.
