JAMMU, Jan 15: Army said today that threats from across the border still persisted but added that the troops were well-prepared, well-trained and well-equipped to meet with any kind of situation.
In a brief chat with media General Officer Commanding (GOC), Tiger Division, Major General Sanjeev Narain said there were threats from across the border but the troops were on high alert to tackle any situation on the borders.
“Threats (from across the border) are there as they always have been, but we are alert,” Major General Narain said after paying tributes at `Balidan Stambh’ here on the occasion of Army Day, which is celebrated across the country today as it was on this day that first India Army chief had taken the command.
He was replying to a question on the threat perception from across the border following the Pathankot attack on January 2 in which 13 persons including seven security personnel and six militants were killed and preparation of the Army to counter any such further attacks on sensitive installations.
Replying to another question on winter management strategy on the borders including early morning dense fog that can be exploited by the infiltrators, the GOC Tiger Division said: “that is something which is annual feature… Fog and weather etc, but the Army is well equipped and well trained to deal with any kind of situation”.
Major General Narain said the Army, as usual, maintains tight vigil and that being done always to keep check on the militants and the infiltrators and ensure that they don’t succeed in their designs.
The Army officer said that Army Day is observed every year on January 15 to pay tributes and remember the sacrifices of the soldiers for the nation.
Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year to pay homage to the valour and courage of brave Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in protecting and upholding the territorial integrity and sanctity of the nation.
The day also marks the beginning of reign of Indian Army, wherein the first Indian Army chief General Cariappa OBE succeeded the British Army General Roy Butcher.
Balidan Stambh, where tributes were paid by the GOC, is a war memorial epitomizing the fallen soldiers of Army, para-military forces and police in upholding the sanctity of the country.
It may be mentioned here that all security agencies including the Army personnel have been put on high alert by the Government to keep strict vigil on vital installations in view of January 2 terror attack on Pathankot Air Force base by six militants and Intelligence inputs not ruling out such attacks in future.
Six militants, all believed to be Pakistanis, had attacked Pathankot airbase on January 2 killing seven security personnel. All militants were gunned down by the security personnel. The militants were believed to have infiltrated from the International Border in Bamiyal area of Punjab sector.
