Freedom of expression is “the biggest joke”: Karan Johar

Karan Johar honoured by UK Parliament for contribution to entertainment industry: Deeply grateful

NEW DELHI: Joining the intolerance debate in Bollywood, filmmaker Karan Johar has said freedom of expression in the country is ‘the biggest joke’.

Speaking at the Jaipur Literature festival, Karan, talking about his book ‘An Unsuitable Boy’ at a session with Shobhaa De and his biographer Poonam Saxena, last evening said, ”How are we democratic? How is there freedom of expression? Everywhere I go, I am scared, I am scared I am saying something in Jaipur, and God knows who’ll file a case when I reach home. So I have become some kind of an FIR king now.”

Opening up about his past and LGBT rights, Karan slammed the archaic laws in the country which criminialise homosexuality. He said that revealing one’s sexual identity in today’s times could land you in jail. “I have not yet revealed. Revealing in today’s time will land you in jail…we’re in a tough country to speak about your personal life,” Karan said. (AGENCIES)
