JAMMU, Jan 22:  Police foiled the protest march by Food and Allied workers, who were proceeding towards Governor House for submitting a memorandum of demands to Governor N N Vohra, here today.
Shouting slogans in support of their demands, such as revision of bag rates, timely wages, release of pending payments, implementation of pension scheme etc, the protesting workers held a strong demonstration near the Press Club Jammu and then started marching towards the old city in the form of a procession. However, the policemen, who were deployed there, did not allow them to proceed further.
The protest was organized under the banner of Food and Allied Workers Union and the demonstration was addressed by the union president, Bishan Dass. He announced that the ongoing strike for the last 15 day would continue till their demands are fulfilled. He also criticized the officers of CAPD Department for not paying attention towards the poor workers and held the Government responsible for the prevailing mess.
Some other leaders of the union also addressed the protest demonstration and highlighted the demands, which include; revision of bag rates in accordance with the  price index, grant of Lead Charges of city supply, creation of separate Labour head in the Directorate  for payment of wages to workers by 10th of each month, immediate release of pending wages of the workers in Muffasil department, deposition of Provident Fund, ESI well in time, replacement of the workers, who have left the job and providing a Listman for city supply at earliest.
Meanwhile, a similar protest was held today at Srinagar where also the Police foiled an attempt of taking out march. Some of the workers were also taken into brief custody by the Police, the union spokesman said.
