Major Gen Jai Shanker Menon of India appointed as UNDOF head

NEW DELHI : Major General Jai Shanker Menon of India has been appointed as the Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which is tasked to maintain the ceasefire between Israel and Syria.
The Peace Keeping Force is also supervising the disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces. Major Gen Menon would succeed Lieutenant General Purna Chandra Thapa of Nepal, who will complete his assignment on February 7, a press statement issued by the United Nation said today.
The new Force Commander brings to his new position an extensive command experience and knowledge of the peacekeeping affairs at the national and international levels. Currently, he was Additional Director General Equipment Management in the Indian Army.
Major Gen Menon had served as General Officer, commanding an Infantry Division, and held a number of other commanding positions, including Commandant of the Regimental Training Centre, Brigade Commander and Battalion Commander.
Major General Menon’s international experience included service as a Military Observer with the United Nations Operation in Mozambique in 1993, and with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), from 2007 to 2009. (AGENCIES)
