Cold wave intensifies in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: The cold wave tightened its grip in many parts of Kashmir today with the minimum temperature dropping in many parts of the Valley.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night’s minus 1.7 degrees Celsius, an official of the Meteorological department said here.

The night temperature in Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir Valley, dropped by two notches from 0.6 degree Celsius to settle at a low of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, the official said.

He said the north Kashmir town of Kupwara recorded a low of minus 2.2 degrees Celsius while Kokernag town in south, registered a low of minus 0.2 degree Celsius.

However, the official said, the mercury in the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir increased from a low of minus 8 degrees Celsius the previous night to settle at a low of minus 6 degrees Celsius.

He said Pahalgam hill resort in south, which serves as the base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra during summer, recorded a low of minus 5 degrees Celsius.

Leh, in Ladakh region, registered a low of minus 13.3 degrees Celsius as compared to minus 13.5 degrees Celsius the previous night, the official said.

He said the nearby Kargil town was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir with the night temperature settling at minus 13.6 degrees Celsius against the previous night’s minus 14 degrees Celsius.

Cold wave continued in the Valley even as it came out of the grip of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period on January 31.

The official said the weather is likely to remain mainly dry over the week ahead and the night temperature may drop further in the Valley and Ladakh region. (AGENCIES)
