Deterrent steps need to be taken against drunken driving: Court

NEW DELHI, Sept 9:
A man held guilty of drunken driving has been sent to jail for five days by a Delhi court, which said many innocent lives might be lost if deterrent steps are not taken against such accused.
“Court can take judicial notice of the fact that majority of accidents which take place on Indian roads is due to driving under the influence of alcohol and if no deterrent steps are taken, many innocent lives are going to be lost in such accidents,” Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Vikas Dhull said.
Refusing to show any leniency, the court directed that the convict Sanjay Bhardwaj, who was out on bail, be taken into custody to serve his five-day jail term.
“Appellant (Sanjay) be taken into custody and be sent to jail for serving the sentence as awarded by the trial court vide its order dated July 16, 2012 for offence under section 185 Motor Vehicles Act (drunken driving),” the court said.
The sessions Judge order came on Sanjay’s plea against the magisterial court’s July 16 decision, which had sentenced him to five days in jail, beside imposing a fine of Rs 2,000 on him for riding a two-wheeler in an inebriated state in West Delhi.
Seeking dismissal of Sanjay’s plea, the prosecution said he was apprehended driving the vehicle in a heavily drunk state after he had jumped a red light.
“The appellant was heavily drunk. A person driving under the influence of alcohol has no respect for traffic laws of this country. In the present case also, he had thrown all caution to the winds and had jumped red light when he was apprehended by the police.
“This conduct of Sanjay had not only put his own life in danger but that of other road users too,” said ASJ Dhull, while refusing to shown any leniency against to him. (PTI)
