JAMMU, Feb 15: The vehicular movement on various roads here witnessed heavy traffic jams after Aditi Welfare India Charitable Trust (AWICT) held protest over women issues.
The members of AWICT along with rape, assault, molestation and dowry victims staged a protest here near Exhibition Ground. The protest was led by Chairman AWICT Aditi Sharma.
Later, the participants took out a peaceful rally to express resentments against the working of police in the issues related to women folk.
Amid slogans, the protesters marched towards Tawi bridge. They demanded action against the police officers, who refuse to take action over the complaints lodged by the women.
The police cops led by SHO Nowabad Ravinder Rakwal failed to pacify the protestors.
No lady police personnel were present, when the protestors including maximum women took out the march and blocked the vehicular movement on the Tawi bridge.
As the protestors sat on Tawi bridge, the vehicular movement on various roads including Dogra Chowk, Canal Road, BC Road, Vinayak Bazaar, etc came to standstill.
Addressing the gathering, Aditi Sharma said “Its quite unfortunate that police personnel, who are supposed to save the rights of human are found humiliating rape, assault and molestation victims”.
She said that mostly women do not feel comfortable to go into police station and spell out their grievances, and the one percent, who musters courage to complain, gets de-motivated by the present system, particularly judiciary and executive wing.
She also cited some examples, where women failed to get justice.
Sharma appealed to the Governor to take action against the erring police officers, who fail to take action over women complaints and issue instructions to the Police Department to ensure proper redressal of the complaints lodged by women. She also demanded opening of more women police stations.
After getting information, SP City Dr Vinod Kumar and SDPO West Sandeep Choudhary rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors.
As the protestors dispersed, it was the turn for the men in blue to clear the jamming on various roads. It took over 2 hours to clear the snarls and ensure smooth plying of the vehicles.
Many commuters also expressed their resentment over the blocking of the Tawi bridge. “Raising voice over women issues is justified, but what is the fun of putting people especially commuters in trouble by blocking the road”, they added.
