Srinagar, Feb 16: A spontaneous shutdown was observed in Pulwama district of South Kashmir against civilian killings that occurred soon after the conclusion of an encounter between security forces and militants on Sunday.
All shops and commercial establishments were closed in main town of Pulwama, Kakapora, Samboora, Lelhar and other adjoining villages. The private and public transport mostly remained off the roads and very thin attendance was recorded in Government offices.
The two civilians including a young lady were killed after security forces allegedly opened fire on hundreds of rock-throwing protesters at Kakapora protesting against the killing of a local militant. The Government has ordered a time-bound magisterial enquiry into the incident.
Although the situation in Pulwama district, by and large, remained peaceful but minor stone-pelting clashes erupted at Kakapora between angry youths and security forces. Police fired teargas towards the protesters but the intermittent clashes continued throughout the day.
