SRINAGAR, Feb 21: Member Parliament, Sangrur, Bhagwant Mann, has said that Punjab Government should immediately form a regulatory body and fix a cap on the intake capacity of private universities, as in its absence more than hundreds of small unaided colleges in Punjab are at the verge of closure.
He said that private unaided colleges should not be covered under this regulatory body as they are already monitored by Centre councils and State universities.
Bhagwant Mann said this during a meeting with a delegation of office bearers of Punjab Unaided Colleges Association (PUCA) at Chandigarh. Dr Anshu Kataria, president, PUCA; Dr Manmohan Garg, finance secretary; Gurpreet Singh, general secretary; Manav Dhawan, tricity coordinator; Cherry Goyal, malwa-I coordinator; Monty Garg, malwa-II coordinator; Ankur Garg, treasurer, were part of the delegation.
“Due to the State Governm-ent’s poor policies and non intervention into private universities, these universities are admitting students in bulk in technical courses which is further resulting into the dilution of the quality of technical education leading to unemployment in the State”, Mann said.
The MP while discussing said that he is not against the private universities but their admission process, administration process, eligibility process, examination process, intake capacity, syllabi, fee structure etc should at least be monitored by some authority as it is being done in case of private unaided colleges.
Mann assured PUCA that he’ll raise the issues related to unaided colleges during Arvind Kejriwal’s visit to Chandigarh and will meet soon with Smriti Irani, HRD Minister, to bring all the problems in her notice so that immediate action can be taken to save dying education Industry in Punjab. He further assured that he will raise voice in Parliament regarding the balance payment of SC scholarship of 2014-15 year and full payment of 2015-16 year.
