Valley shuts over JNU arrests

Srinagar, Feb 27: Kashmir Valley today observed shutdown against the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students and former Delhi University professor SAR Geelani on the charges of sedition after holding a pro-Afzal Guru event early this month.
Shops and commercial establishments were closed in summer capital while public transport thin. The call for shutdown was given by hardline faction of Hurriyat and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and was supported by a number of separatist groups.
Additional contingents of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in strength in sensitive parts of the city including Maisuma and its adjoining areas. Police said there were no restrictions on the movement of people and the situation remained peaceful barring incidents of stone-pelting at Habba Kadal and Saraf Kadal areas here.
The shutdown was also observed in all other parts of the Valley including Baramulla, Anantnag, Kupwara and Pulwama. However no incident of violence was reported from any part of the region. The Valley separatists are seeking release of all students and Geelani booked on sedition charges.
