Mercury dips in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, Mar 5: Day temperature in summer capital Srinagar saw a decrease of five notches as Kashmir valley today experienced fresh rains.
A Meteorological Department official told Excelsior that all parts of the Valley experienced rainfall today. He said the highest rainfall, which continued for nearly an hour, was recorded in Pahalgam.
Pahalgam recorded 1.4 millimeters of rain followed by Kokernag at 1.0 millimeters. Similarly, the MeT official said, Srinagar recorded 0.8 millimeters and Qazigund in South Kashmir and Kupwara in North Kashmir 0.6 millimeters respectively.
The official said that the rains brought down the day temperature in Srinagar to five notches as the mercury settled at 16.3 degree Celsius compared to yesterday’s 21.2 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature in Srinagar was 5.3 degree Celsius.
Pahalgam recorded 15.4 degree Celsius day temperature, Qazigund 15.7 and Kupwara 17.7 degree Celsius. Reports said several higher reaches including in Pahalgam and Gulmarg also received light snow.
The MeT official said that light rain/thundershowers are expected at few place over the State in next 24 hours. Interestingly, today’s  rains coincided with Mahashivratri eve.
