JAMMU, Mar 10: Depar-tment of Nephrology Super Speciality Hospital (SSH), Jammu, and Department of Nephrology, SKIMS, Srinagar, celebrated World Kidney Day with organizing symposiums on the topic ‘kidney diseases in children’ in their respective premises.
This day is celebrated every year on 2nd Thursday of March all over the world to create awareness about kidney diseases.
In SSH Jammu, Dr SK Bali, Prof and HoD Nephrology, while delivering key note address, informed the gathering about the various kidney diseases and their prevention. He said that children at all ages right from birth can suffer from various kidney problems which may go unnoticed for long.
“In addition to the congenital disorders, children commonly suffer from urinary tract infections due to Vesico Ureteric reflux, Nephrotic syndrome and acute glomerulonephritis. Common clinical presentation of Renal disease is in the form of swelling of legs and face, blood and protein in urine. If some of these disorders are not detected early by investigation, it can lead to chronic renal failure in Adolescents or adult life”, he further informed and emphasized the preventive measures which include health education, early detection and proper treatment at early stage.
Dr Surinder Sodhi, Senior Resident, Department of Nephrology, SSH Jammu, informed that the Department of Nephrology in SSH is providing services to the patients of Kidney diseases since its start in 2013. He said around 4500 Haemodialysis are done per year and around 35 CAPD are done annually. “In addition the department is providing indoor, outdoor services to patients of Renal diseases”, he added.
In SKIMS function, the students from Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Green Valley Educational Institute and Kashmir Harvard School gave speech on various aspects of kidney diseases in children followed by question answer session.
On the onset of program, Associate Professor, Dr Muzaffar Wani discussed the significance of World Kidney Day and basic functions of kidney.
Director, SKIMS, Dr Showkat Zargar and Dean, Medical Faculty, Dr Gul Javid, encouraged the children to take care of their kidneys right from childhood to ensure healthy life ahead. The stress was laid on healthy life style, which includes regular exercises, keeping weight in check, monitoring blood pressure regularly, having adequate fluid and most importantly restrain from smoking and self-medication.
On the occasion, Dr Zargar felicitated Khanday Showkat, an 11-year-old boy, who has undergone successful kidney transplant about four years back at SKIMS.
