Despite rains, jewellers continue protest, sit on hunger strike

JAMMU, Mar 12: Despite rains and cold weather conditions, the jewellers continued their protest for the eleventh consecutive day over the excise duty imposed on gold ornaments.
However, goldsmith at Hiranagar started hunger strike demanding immediate roll back of the Central Government’s decision.
Large number of jewelers assembled at Jain Bazaar despite rains and cold weather condition and held protest. They raised slogans in favour of their demands.
Raman Suri, Chairman, Sarafa Association and Swarankar Sangh Joint Action Committee while speaking informed that Jewellers Associations at Central Level met Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and took up the excise duty issue with him. Jaitely assured them that he will consider the demand of jewelers, Suri informed.
Suri asked the jewellers as well as swarnkars to maintain sanctity of jewellery trade and hold bandh and processions peacefully.
Raj Kumar Babber, All India Vice President Swarnkar Sangh and President Swarnkar Sangh, Jammu Province asked the Central Government to save the jewelers community by revoking the decision of excise duty imposed on gold ornaments at the earliest.
Parjan Jain, Kulbhushan Anand, Ajay Vaid and Vijay Kumar Verma besides many others also addressed the gathering and demanded immediate roll back of the excise duty decision.
Meanwhile, Goldsmiths Union of Hiranagar started hunger strike over the excise duty issue. They decided to continue their hunger strike till the excise duty decision rule is abolished by Union Government. President Goldsmith Union Hiranagar Roop Lal Sundan and Vice President Sanjeev Kumar on behalf of all goldsmiths have declared that all community will sit on hunger strike.
