Traffic on Kashmir highway resumes, Ladakh, Gurez remains cut off

SRINAGAR: Traffic on the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country which was suspended last evening after landslides, triggered by heavy rain, has been resumed this morning.
However, the national highway, connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir and historic Mughal road besides Bandipora-Gurez road remained closed since December last year.
A traffic police official said here that traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended last evening following landslides at several places, including Sheeri due to heavy rainsfall.
However, he said, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway immediately pressed into service with sophisticated machine and men to put through the highway.
Police official said though it was still raining at some places but still traffic was resumed on the highway this morning.”We have allowed vehicles, particularly those carrying passenger, to leave Jammu and Srinagar this morning, ”he said adding” vehicles, mostly trucks stranded at several places have also been allowed to move towards their respective destinations.”
Snow clearance operation by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has almost been completed on Zojila, most troubled part on the national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir.
However, there was fresh snowfall at several places on the strategically important highway. The highway remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions following below freezing temperature.
The BRO has already announced that the highway would be put through for traffic about a month earlier this time because of less snowfall this time. However, it could get delayed if there is more snowfall or avalanches, the organization said. (AGENCIES)
