JAMMU, Sept 12: Community Party of India (Marxist) today held a protest demonstration in Gandhi Nagar area, here, to press for the need of Universal Public Distribution System (UPDS) to ensure food security for all citizens.
A large number of party activists from different sectors participated in the protest. Holding red flags and placards in their hands, the activists later took out a rally also and handed over a memorandum of demands to the Divisional Commissioner.
Addressing the activists, Regional Secretary, CPI (M), Sham Prasad Kesar, said that India requires a comprehensive and inclusive food security system, which can only be provided by scrapping the targeted system and replacing it with a universal system.
He demanded that dal, edible oil and other essential commodities be supplied through the public distribution system. With the relentless increase in prices of food items, a universal public distribution system can also help to keep market prices down, he added.
