JAMMU, Sept 12: Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) today expressed strong resentment against the way the IT sleuths are conducting ‘so called’ surveys and appealed the Income Tax Department to avoid harassing the tax payers especially during the festival season.
Addressing a press conference here, YV Sharma, president, of the Jammu Chamber strongly resented the manner in which the IT department had proceeded with the conduct of the ‘IT survey’ at three prominent jewellery houses of the city here.
Mr Sharma said as per rules, business should not be affected during the survey. The IT sleuths conducted the survey in three jewellery shops of a prominent city businessman throughout the day and no business could be done for the whole day by the jeweller, which is against the standing norms.
Sharma said that by these kinds of surveys, the business community gets affected and they left with no option then to close their establishments.
“The Chamber, in principle, neither holds any brief for any tax evader nor does wish to come in the way of the tax regulators performing their function of tax collection in a lawful manner,’’ Mr Sharma added.
He further said the tax paying businessmen, traders and industrialists, who are the creators of the wealth vis-à-vis generating employment and economic progress of the nation, deserve to be treated by the regulators in a manner consistent with the human values.
The Tax department rushed to the press with unfounded claims of detection of concealed income of Rs 8 crore, without allowing any meaningful opportunity to the tax payers for their response on such tall allegations, thereby, causing irrepairable damage to the reputation, dignity, respect of the concerned tax payers.
He appealed the IT department, not to publicize baseless and unfounded claims, so that the reputation and dignity of the owners of the business establishment may not hurt.
The department should solve the issues with interaction, dialogues or any other way, rather than to go to press and disclose unfounded claims, just to show their presence, Mr Sharma added.
Among other present included Sham Lal Langar, Arun Gupta, Bharat Bhushan Gupta, Anil Gupta, Deepak Aggarwal- executive members of CCI besides other businessmen.
