TIRUNELVELI, Mar 20:
The residents of Vallaramapuram hamlet in Southern district of Tamil Nadu sunk into deep grief, as the news spread about the martyrdom of sepoy KVijay Kumar in an avalanche at Kargil area of Jammu and Kashmir, today.
Vijay Kumar, attached to the Madras Regiment of Indian Army had gone missing, on a military post at an altitude of 17,500 feet on Kargil, close to the Line of Control. He was hit by an avalanche on Thursday. The rescue teams of Army recovered the remains of Vijay Kumar from under 12 feet of snow after a gruelling search operation today.
The family members were shocked to hear the news and were inconsolable. The martyr is survived by his parents and two younger sisters. A large number of people gathered at the house of Kumar to console the family members. The details regarding the arrival of the body are awaited.
Official sources said the Army is in the process of evacuating the mortal remains of Vijay Kumar from the avalanche-hit army post, after which it will be brought to his native village. Senior Revenue and Police officials would visit the village tomorrow to oversee the preparations for the State funeral to be accorded to the martyr.
The Indian Army had announced that the cremation ceremony will take place with full military honours. Lance Havildar S.Kumar (38) and Sepoy G Ganesan (25) of 19th Battalion of Madras Regiment were among 10 Army personnel, who were killed last month, after an Army post was hit by an avalance on Siachen Glacier. Kumar and Ganesan hailed from Southern districts of Theni and Madurai in Tamil Nadu. (UNI)
