Protest in Mendhar, road blocked for 3 hrs

MENDHAR, Sept 13: Some families of  Galuta, supported by locals held protest demonstration against the District administration and blocked Mendhar-Surankote road for over three hours today.
Members of about half a dozen families, supported by their relatives and other villagers today came out on the road at around 7.30 am at Galuta near Harni and raised barricades. Accompanied by women and their children, the families of Firoz Din, Mir Mohammed, Lal Hussain, Mohd Bashir and others sat on dharna on the road. They started shouting slogans against the Government.
These families had been dislodged from a piece of State land, measuring nearly 12 kanals few days back in a major operation, which they had occupied since long. Addl DC and Addl SP Poonch were leading this anti-encroachment operation. The district administration after retrieving State land deployed police and FPF men there. These villagers had strongly protested against the operation by the District administration.
Today again, they came out on the road and disrupted the movement of traffic  for over three and half hours. A large number of vehicles remained stranded on the road for long time. The villagers raised slogans against ADC Poonch, SDM Mendhar and the senior District Police Officers. Later, SHO Gursai, Tehsildar S. Iqbal Singh  and Sarpanch of the area  went to the people and gave assurance to take up the issue with DC Poonch. They pacified the agitating people and asked them not to harass the general public as many of them have been stranded on both sides of the road due to blockade. They lifted dharna at around 11 am. There after the traffic could be restored on the road.
